By now we have all heard about the despicable acts of spitting, shouting racial slurs, homophobic slang and brick throwing outside of the capitol during the health care debate. Then there was the cocky self-aggrandizing good ol’ boy club inside including Boehener leaning as though he were sidled up to a bar (a position I am certain he has been in before) and arrogantly proposing opposition measures and rules in a desperate attempt to stop the vote on this historic legislation.

Not to be out done, a classless blowhard and very sore looser from Texas screamed out “baby killer” as the republicans watched their months of efforts to defend the profits of the insurance companies over the health of Americans dissipate in a puff of smoke.

So why am I recapping what most of us have already read and heard about this childishness? Because I ran across this email by a University of Ottawa official sent to Ann Coulter and warning her to tone down her hate rhetoric and anti-Semitic vitriol because in Canada…they actually believe that polite, respectful discourse leads to more productive and informed conversation – even during debates.

“Dear Ms. Coulter,

I understand that you have been invited by University of Ottawa Campus Conservatives to speak at the University of Ottawa this coming Tuesday. We are, of course, always delighted to welcome speakers on our campus and hope that they will contribute positively to the meaningful exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of a great university campus. We have a great respect for freedom of expression in Canada, as well as on our campus, and view it as a fundamental freedom, as recognized by our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I would, however, like to inform you, or perhaps remind you, that our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or “free speech”) in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States. I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here.

You will realize that Canadian law puts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression. For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges. Outside of the criminal realm, Canadian defamation laws also limit freedom of expression and may differ somewhat from those to which you are accustomed. I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind.

There is a strong tradition in Canada, including at this University, of restraint, respect and consideration in expressing even provocative and controversial opinions and urge you to respect that Canadian tradition while on our campus. Hopefully, you will understand and agree that what may, at first glance, seem like unnecessary restrictions to freedom of expression do, in fact, lead not only to a more civilized discussion, but to a more meaningful, reasoned and intelligent one as well.

I hope you will enjoy your stay in our beautiful country, city and campus.

Wow! Civility! What a lost concept. Of course  Coulter is eating this up. She is source for some of the most vial hate speech and frankly I don’t blame Vice President Houle for giving her a word of caution. Where does it advance a discussion to hatefully make comments like Coulter’s following? (Pay particular attention to her remark on Freedom of Speech!)

America…this is your conservative celebrity. The Coulters, Limbaughs, Levins…representing a very disturbing and dangerous population that is growing verbose and brazen. After the vote churches…churches…were calling for their sheeples to rise up and protest against this “pro-abortion bill. And last night there were several reports of windows across the country shattered by objects thrown by violent mob-mentality conservatives who targeted offices of congress members who voted to pass health care.

I remember clearly having impassioned disagreements with individuals as a lobbyist in the halls of Alaska’s capitol…but I can honestly tell you that it never digressed into the sewer the way neo-conservatives have chosen to attack with venom and hate today. Never. What is wrong with these people? Honestly…

UPDATE: As you all know by now, Palin’s “speech” was broadcast on C-span and MSNBC last night…initially they had announced that it was going to be a Press blackout. So my reference below is outdated, but it is a common desire by Palin and her “handlers” (ewww) to always strive for private closed door gatherings…she is just that special!

White Racial Resentment Bubbles Under the Surface of the Tea Party Movement

Editor’s Note: Rich Benjamin’s commentary on the underlying “white grievance” currents in the Tea Party movement were buttressed Thursday by the statements of Republican Tom Tancredo, the opening speaker at the Tea Party convention. Tancredo told attendees that President Barack Obama was elected because “we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country,” an allusion to how Southern states used literacy tests as part of an effort to deny suffrage to African American voters before the civil rights era.

The depth of ignorance is bottomless! In his racist remarks he so lacks clarity as to who his followers are that he misses the mark by a mile. These people truly don’t get that had there been a civics test…it’s not the African American population that would have been denied the right to but rather the Teabagging Hatriots…his very own supporters! What an ass! The article goes on to say…

How fitting, therefore, that Sarah Palin keynote the movement’s first organized confab. Packed beneath her beehive is a spitfire brew of optimistic, yet aggrieved, whiteness. Palin embodies a bizarre, sometimes alluring, combination of triumph and complaint that many Caucasian Tea Partiers identify with through and through.

Okay…time out. So wrapped up in all this one race, bible-belt battle cry there is the ongoing rhetoric about money, conservative budgeting, responsible spending,  and so forth. So I just want to get this correct. To attend this Hate-Fest filled with angry white people, you are looking to lay out a whopping $549.00+9.95 fee, of which $349.00 of that is solely to get you in to hear the word salad Queen give her speech.

These people are having far fewer problems than the rest of us “true Americans” to afford that kind of expenditure! Her speaking fee is $100,000 and she has these sheeple convinced that she is just one of them…a simple homespun gal from the backwoods that don’t know nuthin’ and is proud of it. And in all her proclaimed passion for her fellow extremists of every ilk…it would just simply be beneath her to speak to them for nuthin’….

These are “Palin-folk”…plain and oh so simple. But I have to say…Palin walks her talk! When she says she takes a stand against taxes, by god she means it! I can hear her saying….“Cabins? What cabins? Hey, if they didn’t catch I’m not tellin’. I’m a ‘rell’ American, and us patriots are above taxes…oh, and the law.”

Denouncing government assistance and free school lunches at a town hall meeting in late January, South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer, a Tea Party supporter, said: “My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that.”

Really? She wasn’t highly educated? NO! And yet someone provided ample food supply enough that she reproduced and isn’t the world lucky to have loving Christian Americians like Andre Bauer! Does this make you as sick to your stomach as it does me? His comments were about Haitian refugee assistance and free school lunches! And this inbred politician suggests that starving the needy is a genocidal answer. What in God’s name is going on?

And the capper? Queen Esther of the High Order of the Common Teabaggers has of course, demanded that her nonsense is closed to the Press. You know all that talk Palin spews forth about “change” and “beltway transparency”? Hmmm…do you suppose this is what she means?

I guess when you are colluding with armed wingnuts to plot an insurrection of the very country that you profess such undying love for…it really is best to do these things behind closed doors.
