Dominionism in American Politics – "Expanding the discussion behind the Headlines"
What IS Dominionism?
In a word - theocracy.
Think of this word as a big umbrella. Under the umbrella of Political Dominionism are numerous "franchises" or sects of radical Christian belief whose goal it is to take "dominion" over all things secular.
Friend and fellow researcher, Bruce Wilson, has written a spot on piece today and posted it over at the Huffington Post. With his permission I am re-posting here as well…
Valerie Plame & Joe Wilson Furious as CA Democrats Snub Leader Fighting Theocratic Takeover of Military
by Bruce Wilson
“It is unconscionable in our view to tie political courage to partisan activities… Democrats are not the only ones who demonstrate political courage,” wrote a furious Joe and Valerie Wilson on Friday, returning their “Political Courage” awards to the influential Pacific Palisades Democratic Club of California. In 2003 the two were victims of Republican partisan revenge. Now, in an apparent act of Democratic partisan revenge that actor and celebrity Ed Asner has called a “circular firing squad,” the club has just withdrawn its “Political Courage” award offer from Military Religious Freedom Foundation head Mikey Weinstein, who has led the fight against efforts by radical evangelical Christian groups to take over the United States military.
On May 21st Hollywood’sFair Game, starring Noami Watts and Sean Penn, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie is based on the lives of Joe Wilson and Valerie Wilson, whose secret identity as a CIA agent working undercover against nuclear proliferation under the name “Valerie Plame” was in 2003 exposed by syndicated columnist Robert Novak.
In their Friday, May 28th letter to the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club Joseph and Valerie Wilson wrote that Military Religious Freedom Foundation founder and head Mikey Weinstein has placed his life on the line in an ongoing campaign that has “almost single handedly” helped to blunt illegal and unconstitutional coercive evangelizing in the US military. Presumably that’s why the influential and affluentPacific Palisades Democratic Club of Santa Monica, California had offered Weinstein the club’s Anne Froelich Political Courage Award, which in the past has gone to heavy hitters such as Ron Kovic, Phil Donahue, Daniel Ellsberg, and Joseph and Valerie Wilson.
But the club has just withdrawn its offer. The stated reason ? – Mikey Weinstein served in the first Reagan Administration. In response, in a gesture Hollywood can well understand, Valerie “Plame” Wilson and Joe Wilson are returning their Anne Froelich Political Courage to the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club – in an act of solidarity with their friend Mikey Weinstein.
Former US Ambassador Joe Wilson, who served in both the Clinton and George Bush Sr. Presidential Administrations, has recently joined Weinstein’s MRFF Board of Directors.
Can Republicans exhibit “political courage”? According to Weinstein the club’s decision to pull the award is ludicrous and offensive, and a “slap in the face” that appears to question the courage of fighting men and women in the US military, many of whom are Republicans, whose freedom of religion interests Weinstein’s MRFF represents. The nonprofit Military Religious Freedom Foundation has worked with over 18,000 clients in the US military, states Weinstein, 94% of whom are Christian.
Describing MRFF’s ongoing efforts to protect the right of active duty United States military personnel to hold whatever religious or philosophical beliefs they choose and be free from unwanted religious coercion, Mikey Weinstein explains, “It’s not a political spectrum right or left issue — it’s a Constitutional right or wrong issue.”
Twice nominated for a Nobel Peace prize for his MRFF work that was featured in a May 25, 2010Foreign Policy magazine story, Mikey says the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club’s courage award might as well now be called the “political cowardice award.” He’s not alone in his outrage.
In an exceptionally hard-hitting letter to Mike Stryer, President of the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club, Joseph and Valerie Wilson wrote,
Real Courage
“We find it outrageous that you would offer the same award to Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and then rescind the offer because he “served in the Reagan White House”. Mikey has single handedly thwarted the efforts of the Fundamentalist Christian right to convert our armed forces from one that serves the constitution of the United States and the defense of our homeland, and includes citizens of all faiths, into one that fights wars in the name of a specific brand of extremely conservative Christianity, and deeply discriminates against those who observe other faiths…
You might want to rethink the Political Courage Award program altogether. You make a mockery of the term when your organization itself demonstrates such an absence of political courage by your actions. Mikey, quite literally, has put his life on the line for separation of church and state, a principle articulated in our nation’s constitution, not in some party platform. Presumably that was the reason you honored him in the first place. He certainly remains worthy of that honor whatever his past or present politics might be.”
As a fellow Board Member, I am extremely proud to welcome Joe Wilson to Miltary Religious Freedom Foundation and applaud the actions of he and his wife in their stellar defense of Mikey WEinstein and MRFF!
According to Mikey Weinstein he had already arranged for Hollywood celebrity and Democratic Party backer Ed Asner to speak at the award ceremony. Asner called the decision a “circular firing squad,” and the decision to withdraw Weinstein’s award was so controversial within the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club itself that, according to Mikey Weinstein, Gary Bettman, who had headed a subcommittee presiding over the original decision to give Weinstein the award, resigned in protest.
Although Weinstein is a longtime registered Republican, he says he has voted in past elections for presidential candidates Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama, explaining that “the [Republican] party left me, I didn’t leave it.”
There’s plenty of evidence to back up Mikey Weinstein’s suggestion of an ideological sea change within the GOP over the past several decades. A2000 surveyby academics Kimberly H. Conger and John C. Green, commissioned by Campaign & Elections Inc.and published in 2002, determined that by the year 2000 the religious right had achieved “a strong position in 18 state Republican parties,” and a moderate level of influence within GOP party structures in 26 US states, twice as many as when the same Campaign & Elections Inc.-sponsored survey was done in 1994.
In a 1994 interviewwith the Washington Post, 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, once accorded the stature of an arch-conservative, had harsh words for the rising religious right faction within the GOP:
“When you say ‘radical right’ today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye.”
Does anything transcend the current Republican/Democratic ideological divide in American politics ? As Joe and Valerie Wilson’s letter admonished the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club,
“It is unconscionable in our view to tie political courage to partisan activities, particularly those that took place over twenty-five years ago. Democrats are not the only ones who demonstrate political courage. By applying your partisan criteria to the selection of recipients of the award, I clearly received mine in error as I was appointed Ambassador by President George H. W. Bush. And I am a registered independent. Please also cease and desist using our names to promote anything related to the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club or the Political Courage Award program.”
This speaks to a greater issue of dismissal…not only with a discriminatory party politic…but of a supposed intellect that supersedes the goal. Too often these organizations become…in a word…elite. Yep! I said it. It happens on ALL sides!
But here is my point. WHAT are we fighting for – and against? Do we really remember when we gather in these committees; sub-committees; groups; fundraisers…and so on what the goal even is? I have experienced it firsthand. When well-meaning individuals join organizations thinking that it is about the cause…only to find out it is really about the fractured personalities of those who are involved.
A “Mutual Admiration Society”…shall we say. This is how I have referred to these gatherings over the years as I have watched politics in action.
So, once AGAIN the progressives show their dysfunction. AGAIN this demonstrates why the neocons enjoy unprecedented successes at things like…oh, I don’t know…voter turnout for example.
Great Post! This is really sad. I have been disgusted by some of the factless partisan tactics that some on the left have used recently. It is strange that the basic values of our country can't be a point that we can come together and cooperate on. Well, who the heck would want their darn reward now.
I listened to a radio interview you did on line last nigh, it was excellentt. I am glad you are doing your work to educate the public about dominionism as well as separation of church and state. I am looking forward to your next book.
Thank you Celia. I will be on a program out of Charlotte, N.C. this week…that is always interesting! They have definitely shot themselves in the foot in more than one way, and there is no chance for making up by rescinding their recension!
Yes, Leah, we live in amazingly disturbing times… or maybe disturbingly amazing times?
I have read that the chinese symbol for Crisis also denotes Opportunity and we see this in you, in Mr.Weinstein, in the Wilsons and in so many others who absolutely have the courage of their convictions and are willing to face ugly consequences from the furies of those who disagree.
People do not become heroes because they have no fears, they become heroes in spite of their fears! With great respect I applaud all of you!
I am so happy that former Ambassador Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame led the charge against the bone-headed decision to rescind Mikey Weinstein's honor. I am proud of everyone who joined their protest and voice their opinions and resigned. It speaks well of their character and courage.
I am ashamed of the Palisades Democratic Club's narrow-minded vision. Its leaders seem to have lost their ability to see the most important issues, the larger vision of what they purport to stand for and have, instead, settled for a partisan, blinders-on approach to honoring those who stand for the best in our national spirit. Where is the integrity in this organization? They have lowered themselves to a partisan level equal to the vengeful Sarah Palin, demonstrating they have as little understanding of history (e.g., Wilson's service to two administrations – one Democratic and the other Republican) and appreciation of what it means to be an American (all parties should work towards the good of the whole).
My thanks to former Ambassador Wilson and to Valerie Plame for using their prominence to bring this issue to light. My apologies to Mikey Weinstein that an organization such as the Palisades Democratic Club, would be so petty and short-sighted as to insult the work he has done and what he stands for and against.
These people, along with Ed Asner and Gary Bettman, should be applauded by everyone who believes in honor and integrity. Bruce Wilson and Leah Burton belong in this list as well. As analysts and reporters, they serve the country's best interests by exposing bigotry and lies.
I thank you all for your service to this country. You don't have to wear a uniform to serve the ideals upon which our country was founded and which have been fine-tuned over the years in hopes of bringing out the best in our citizens and offering protection and opportunity for all.
I can't tell you what an honor it is to be able to serve alongside both Mikey and Ambassador Wilson on our Board of Directors! As soon as the MRFF June newsletter comes out with the formal announcement, I will do a post to remind people of just who Wilson is, and why Cheney and Rove outed his wife as a CIA agent, putting her life at risk. I can't wait to see the new movie about their story that is being released called, "Fair Game".
You have done an excellent job of pointing out something that has bothered me for a long time: the progressives' love of the circular firing squad. The theocratic "republican" party have had much success because they all are on the same page moving the same direction. Anyone who strays is brought back into line pronto, or kick out altogether. We progressives seem unable to agree on some basic principles and move forward expressing those principles. Instead, we seem determined to kill off any truly progressive leaders because we apparently don't have faith in our own convictions. I look at those like Dennis Kucinich who would lead us in a truly progressive direction, but who is immediately marginalized out of fear, I think. The retraction of the award to Mickey Weinstein reflects more of this thinking. I wonder if it was because Mickey is a "republican" or a Jew. In any event, it reflects very poorly on the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club that they are unable to honor a man who is doggedly fighting for the Constitution and our military. In my opinion, turning our military into a theocratic army fighting for a narrow "Christian" view of God instead of the Constitution would be worse than a disaster. It could mean the destruction of the Constitution. Mikey deserves more than just an award for political courage, he needs all of us following his lead.
You nailed it…fear. They use it on the right to immobilize their supporters and keep them from wandering from the fold and ever-faithful; we simply succumb to it on a regular basis immobilizing ourselves into not picking a strong platform and seeing it through.
The other aspect that people are NOT getting is, frankly, who gives a *!@#$ what political party someone is or has been affiliated with? It is the content of their character and the product of their actions that should be applauded and rewarded. Until the advent of the Religious Right and the insistence of making Christianity one of the pillars of the GOP, there were more times than not that democratic and republican ideals would cross out of genuine concern for America and its citizens. The extremists aer at the helm in both camps and neither of them can see where in the hell they are going!
So a liberal, left-wing wacko organization has snubbed a left-wing wacko guy like Weinstein. Have you lost your mind? This is a democrat administration! There can't be any MRFF-type problems any more; those were all Bush's fault. Duh…

You are right, but I would like to take this just a bit further:
Adrenaline reinforced by testosterone can be a deadly combination to the person experiencing them.
Most often these endocrine surges appear in the form of heart attacks, strokes and/or kidney failures, but then there are those other manifestations in which persons do not internalize, but exhibit outward aggressions instead which in the extreme, lead to murder and mayhem.
Unfortunally, these surges can be reinforced by unscrupulous agitators of all stripes.

I could write paragraphs but what I really feel is that this is sad stuff. Rather shitty timing I think.
